Average response time: under 24 hours

A concrete grinder vacuum loses suction when the HEPA or main filter loads with fine silica dust — usually after 2–4 hours of grinding on a high-output disc. The fix is not a bigger vacuum; it is filter cleaning, filter replacement, hose inspection, and matching CFM to the disc width. Ninety percent of "my vacuum is weak" complaints are a clogged pre-filter, not a motor problem.
A floor grinder produces fine, abrasive dust that goes straight to the filter. Unlike a workshop vacuum picking up drywall dust, concrete dust is sharp and hydrophobic; it sticks to filter media and does not release during standard filter shaker. Within a single shift, the filter can become a near-solid mat, and suction drops from 250 CFM to 60 CFM. Operators then assume the motor is dying and buy another vacuum, when they needed a maintenance routine.
| Cause | How to check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| HEPA filter saturated | Remove, inspect light transmission | Replace every 40–80 hours |
| Pre-filter / fleece loaded | Squeeze; dust cake visible | Change fleece every shift |
| Hose leak or cracked cuff | Feel around joints while running | Replace cuff or hose |
| Chip bag / full drum | Visual | Empty when 1/3 full |
| Worn brushes in motor | Motor sound changes | Service motor, not replace vacuum |
| Disc-to-hose mismatch | Disc wider than hood sealing | Upgrade hood or reduce disc width |
Stripping coatings with PCD coating-removal tooling produces huge volumes of fine dust — often 3–5× the output of standard diamond grinding. A vacuum sized for 30/40 grit metal-bond work will not keep up with PCD stripping, and the filter clogs in under an hour. If you run PCD tooling, upgrade to an industrial HEPA unit with automatic filter cleaning, or accept a shorter filter-change cycle. Our rhombus trapezoid discs produce less dust per square meter than PCD tools and are easier on the vacuum.
A 250 mm single-head grinder typically needs 150–200 CFM. A 650 mm planetary grinder needs 350+ CFM. If your vacuum was sized for a small grinder and you upgraded to a 700 mm machine, suction will feel weak no matter how clean the filter. Match the vacuum rating to the widest disc on the floor, not the smallest.
If suction drops, in this order: (1) empty the drum, (2) shake or clean the filter, (3) check the hose from machine to vacuum for splits, (4) check the hood seal on the grinder, (5) replace the pre-filter fleece, (6) only then suspect the motor. Most of the time step 1–3 solves the issue. If the vacuum struggles again within the hour, the filter is saturated and needs replacement — not more shaking.
A: No. Washing compresses the media and destroys HEPA rating. Replace.
A: When it hits one-third full. Concrete dust is heavy; a full drum blocks airflow.
A: Yes, roughly 10–15 % per extra 5 m. Use the shortest hose that reaches.
A: Vacuum is for dry grinding. Wet cutting uses slurry pickup, not a standard dust vacuum.
Once you have the maintenance routine in place, size up if you keep fighting clogging. Most contractors start with a single-motor HEPA unit on a 250 mm grinder. When they move to a 650 mm planetary machine, they need a twin-motor unit with 350+ CFM and automatic filter shaker. The capital cost is real, but the hours saved on filter changes and the cleaner job site pay for themselves in three months. If you run PCD tooling regularly, budget for a dedicated vacuum just for stripping work — mixing fine silica dust with thick coating chips in the same drum kills filters fast.
Lost suction is a maintenance issue, not a vacuum failure. Build a filter-cleaning routine into every shift, size the CFM to the widest disc, and treat PCD stripping as a special case. Contact JOY TECH for tooling matched to the dust output of your existing vacuum setup.
