Core bits attach to machines mainly through three connections: the 1-1/4" UNC thread (standard on most core drilling rigs), the 1/2" BSP thread (common on hand-held drills), and quick-change bayonet or SDS adapters. Check the thread printed on your machine spindle and match it before buying - an adapter converts between them when they differ.
| Thread | Typical use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1-1/4" UNC | Industrial core rigs | De facto standard for 50-200 mm bits |
| 1/2" BSP | Hand-held drills | Common on smaller 20-50 mm bits |
| 1/2" UNC | US-market hand drills | Similar size to BSP but different pitch |
Using the wrong thread cross-threads the connection, wobbles the bit, and can tear the spindle. A mismatched thread also runs out of true, which makes the hole oversized and the bit wear unevenly. Never force a bit onto a spindle - if it does not thread smoothly, the pitch or diameter is wrong.
Use a core drill thread adapter: one end threads to the machine, the other accepts the bit thread. Always check that the adapter locks and that the bit seats fully. A core drill accessories kit usually includes the most common adapters plus a water swivel.
A: No. UNC is a Unified National Coarse thread (pitch 7 TPI), BSP is a British Standard Pipe thread with a different pitch and form. They are not interchangeable.
A: Not directly - you need a bayonet-to-thread adapter, or buy bits in the thread your machine already has.
A: Either the adapter is worn, the bit shank is out of round, or the thread was not tightened fully. Inspect and replace the worn part.
A: Most 50-200 mm bits use 1-1/4" UNC, but very large or heavy-duty rigs sometimes use 1-1/2" or a flange mount. Always verify.
Thread matching is a 30-second check that prevents ruined spindles and wasted jobs. JOY TECH core bits come in the standard threads plus adapters and swivels to fit almost any rig - tell us your machine model and we will confirm compatibility before shipping.
