To cut reinforced concrete cleanly, use a laser-welded diamond blade with a soft metal bond and medium to high diamond concentration. The soft bond exposes new diamond grit fast when it hits steel, while the hard diamond grains abrade the rebar. Avoid hard-bond blades on rebar: they glaze over, overheat, and lose segments within a few cuts.
Plain concrete is abrasive; the sand and aggregate wear the bond evenly. Rebar is ductile steel that does not abrade—it melts and smears under the blade. A hard bond designed to hold segments forever will stop cutting the moment it touches steel, because the diamonds can no longer protrude.
A soft bond, on the other hand, wears back fast enough to expose fresh diamonds as they pass through steel. The result: smooth cuts through both phases of the composite.
You can see the difference in our diamond saw blades category: every reinforced-concrete blade is laser welded and marked with its recommended application.
| Rebar size | Recommended blade |
|---|---|
| #3 - #4 (10-13 mm) | Standard soft-bond laser blade |
| #5 - #6 (16-19 mm) | Soft bond, higher diamond concentration |
| #7 - #8+ (22-25 mm) | Premium soft bond, wall saw or wire saw |
A: It will work, but it will glaze and wear out 2-3 times faster. A blade explicitly rated for reinforced concrete pays for itself on rebar-heavy cuts.
A: The bond is too hard for steel. The diamonds cannot protrude, friction spikes, and the segment overheats. Switch to a softer bond or dress the blade on an abrasive block.
A: No, if the bond is correct. The blade will simply wear faster. If it is the wrong bond, it can lose segments, which is dangerous.
A: Cut them together with the correct blade. Cutting rebar separately with a reciprocating saw is slow and leaves the bar inside the slab.
Reinforced concrete rewards the right blade. Soft bond, laser weld, and adequate segment height are the three non-negotiables.
