Use a hand-held angle grinder or small 3-5 inch grinder with a coarse metal cup wheel to level uneven outdoor stair nosings, working in short diagonal passes and checking with a straightedge as you go. Step edges need careful control — grind the high points only, keep the nose profile intact, and finish with a medium grit before sealing.
If the treads are severely spalled, the steps are steep, or you need to cut more than about 5 mm off the nosing, consider grinding small amounts only, or having a pro re-pour or resurface the step. Grinding too deep weakens the nose and is a trip hazard.
A: Yes, with a dust extraction shroud. Dry grinding creates silica dust, so extraction or a mask is mandatory.
A: Usually 2-5 mm max. More than that risks exposing aggregate and weakening the edge.
A>Coarse metal, around 30-40 grit, for high spots, then medium (50-70) to blend the finish.
A: A smooth grind can be slippery outdoors. Finish with a medium texture or apply an anti-slip treatment after grinding.
Outdoor step leveling is a precise job: coarse metal cup wheel, diagonal short passes, and constant straightedge checks. A small metal-bond disc in the JOY-TP3-T5 range fits hand grinders for tread work. Contact JOY TECH for cup wheels and small-format discs sized to your grinder.
