A standard set of diamond resin polishing pads (8 pieces per grit, fitted to a 3-head planetary grinder) covers roughly 300–800 m² on normal 28–35 MPa concrete before the resin wears down to the diamond layer. Coverage drops to 150–300 m² on hard concrete (over 40 MPa) and rises to 600–1,200 m² on soft or old wear surfaces. Copper-bond and hybrid pads last 2–4 times longer than pure resin on hard mixes.
| Pad type | Typical coverage (m² per set) | Best on |
|---|---|---|
| Resin bond, 50–3000 grit | 300–800 | Normal 28–35 MPa concrete, terrazzo |
| Copper-bond hybrid (JOY-RFP-C1) | 600–1,500 | Hard concrete, fast transitions |
| Copper-bond transitional (JOY-RFP-C2) | 500–1,200 | Bridge between metal and resin |
| Ceramic-bond transitional (JOY-RFP-T1/T4/T7) | 800–2,000 | Aggressive opening, exposed aggregate |
| Burnishing pad (JOY-RFP-BP2) | 2,000–5,000 | Final gloss, maintenance |
A pad is at end of life when any of these happens:
Track coverage per pad set in a small notebook. After three jobs you will know the real m² per set for your mix — far more accurate than the catalog estimate.
Do not run a pad until it is completely dead on a visible area. Change when the scratch pattern plateaus; pushing a worn pad "to finish the room" is the main cause of burn marks and uneven gloss. For a 500 m² retail floor, budget one spare set of each grit in the truck.
A: On a 3-head grinder with 3 pads per plate, divide the set coverage by 3. A 600 m² set means roughly 200 m² per individual pad.
A: Often yes. Cheap resin with low diamond concentration wears in half the time and leaves swirl marks. A slightly more expensive pad usually costs less per m² polished.
A: You can dress a glazed pad to expose fresh diamonds, but once the resin is below the diamond layer there is nothing left to expose. Discard it.
A: Yes. Water keeps the bond cool and washes away dust, typically extending pad life by 20–40% on the same job.
Plan pad life by your concrete hardness, not by the catalog. Track real coverage for three jobs, then build a spare-pad budget that matches. For hybrid and copper-bond pads that extend life on hard concrete, contact JOY TECH — we can quote by m² for your project.
