A set of quality resin polishing pads typically covers 300-800 m² depending on grit and concrete hardness: coarse grits (200-400) wear faster and often last 300-500 m², while fine grits (1500-3000) last 500-800 m². Pads are reusable until the diamond layer wears thin or the pad stops cutting evenly, not by a fixed number of uses.
Three factors wear pads fast: grinding on concrete harder than the pad's bond, running pads on floors contaminated with sand or coatings, and pressing hard or running too fast. Coarse resin pads on medium-hard concrete also wear quicker than fine pads because they cut deeper with larger diamonds. Cleaning the floor between steps protects the pads more than anything else you can do.
Rotate pads between machines and between passes so wear stays even. Brush pads clean between grit changes and let them dry. Match pad bond to concrete hardness: for very hard, dense concrete use a softer-bond pad that self-sharpens; for soft concrete use a harder bond. Store pads flat, away from heat and solvents.
Replace a pad when the diamond layer is visibly thin, when it feels hard and smooth instead of slightly rough, or when it stops producing progress in the pass (the floor does not change after a full pass). A pad that shreds, loses segments, or delaminates from the backing is finished regardless of remaining thickness. Check the pad face under good light after every grit change.
On large floors, use a set of pads per machine and swap to a fresh set at the halfway point of the day, then rotate the used set back after the first set rests. This evens the wear and keeps cutting speed high. Track square meters per set so you can predict when to order the next batch.
A: Small pads used on edges and stairs cover far less area, roughly 30-80 m² per set, because the working surface is small and edge work is demanding.
A: Only after thorough cleaning. A loaded pad cuts slower and can leave streaks. If it is blackened and hard, replace it.
A> Usually yes. Fine grits remove less material per pass, so the diamond layer wears more slowly, as long as the floor is clean and the pads are not overloaded.
Think of pad life in square meters, not number of uses. Keep floors clean, rotate tooling, match bond to concrete, and replace pads when they stop cutting. That routine gets the most gloss out of every set of diamond resin floor polishing pads.
