Choose a hook-and-loop backer holder that matches your resin pad diameter and your grinder's thread or bolt pattern. Use a hard 12–14 mm holder for coarse resin grits (50–200), a medium holder for 400–800, and a soft 6–8 mm holder for 1500–3000 gloss. Replace the holder when the hooks wear smooth, because a loose pad flutters, overheats, and leaves a wavy scratch pattern instead of a uniform shine.
The holder sits between your machine and the pad. It does three jobs: it transfers pressure evenly across the pad face, it carries the pad's hook-and-loop loop layer, and it flexes just enough to follow a slightly uneven floor. A worn or wrong holder turns a good pad into a bad finish. Pressure spots chew through the resin in minutes, while a holder that is too stiff skips over low spots and leaves them dull.
| Holder density | Thickness | Use with | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hard | 12–14 mm | 50–200 grit resin | Flat floors, fast cutting, scratch removal |
| Medium | 9–11 mm | 400–800 grit | General polishing, mixed floors |
| Soft | 6–8 mm | 1500–3000 grit, burnishing | Gloss development, uneven floors, edges |
Soft holders flex into the texture of the floor, so fine-grit pads contact every grain and build gloss faster. Hard holders bite flatter and cut more aggressively, but they will not conform to a wavy slab.
On small jobs our 3'' Diamond Resin Floor Polishing Pads (JOY-RFP-05) screw straight onto an M14 angle-grinder holder. For mid-size swing machines, the 5''/125mm Spiral Diamond Resin Polishing Pads (JOY-RFP-S2) pair with a standard 5" velcro holder.
A holder costs a fraction of a pad set. Running it past its life burns pads two or three times faster.
A: A medium holder works for most jobs, but coarse grits cut noticeably flatter on a hard holder and fine grits build gloss faster on a soft one. Two holders cover a small shop.
A: Usually the holder velcro is worn, so the pad lifts and flutters. Replace the holder; if the swirl stays, check that the pad is not already loaded with coarse slurry.
A: A 17" velcro driver plate. Burnishing pads like the Burnishing Pads for Concrete Floor Polishing (JOY-RFP-BP2) are made for that plate, not for a hand grinder.
The right backer holder is the cheapest upgrade on your polishing setup. Match diameter and thread to the machine, choose density by grit, and retire the holder the day the hooks wear. Contact JOY TECH for resin pads and backer holders sized for your grinder.
