Higher diamond concentration does not always mean better value. Concentration works together with bond hardness: hard concrete needs a medium-hard bond and higher concentration to hold diamonds; soft concrete needs a softer bond with lower concentration so fresh diamond keeps exposing. The right pairing gives the lowest cost per square meter.
Concentration is quoted in percentages or carats per cubic centimeter. Standard tooling ranges from about 20% to 45%.
| Concrete type | Recommended approach |
|---|---|
| Hard, abrasive, high-psi concrete | Higher concentration with a medium-hard bond — diamonds last and cut steadily. |
| Soft, sandy, low-psi concrete | Lower concentration with a softer bond — segments sharpen themselves. |
| Mixed or unknown floors | Start with a balanced mid-range concentration and test on a patch. |
| Coating removal | PCD tooling or coarse metal with high wear resistance, not fine diamond concentration. |
On soft concrete, a high-concentration segment with a hard bond holds the diamond too long. The segment glazes, stops cutting, and generates heat — and the operator pushes harder, wearing the bond unevenly. The result is a plate that lasts longer but cuts slower, which is not better value.
Your supplier should be able to adjust bond and concentration together — ask for a recommendation per concrete type.
A: Most standard trapezoid and bar segments sit in the 25-35% range and work across average warehouse and garage concrete.
A: Not linearly. Doubling concentration roughly increases life, but cutting speed drops and the price rises; the sweet spot is where cost per sqm is lowest.
A: Usually not. Coarse grinding favors a balance of speed and wear; resin polishing pads use very different concentration and bond design.
A: Ask the supplier for the spec sheet. Most reputable manufacturers publish concentration and bond hardness per model, such as the Block Segment Diamond Trapezoid Grinding Disc (JOY-TP-B) family.
Treat concentration and bond as one decision. Tell your supplier the concrete hardness and the job stage, and let them pair concentration with bond — a matched Diamond Trapezoid Grinding Disc (JOY-TP-R3) will out-earn a generic high-concentration plate on the same floor.
