Most grinding should run on the machine's own weight with no extra down-pressure. Let the diamond segments shear the surface; pushing down forces the bond into the concrete, glazes segments, and wears tooling unevenly. Add weight only for heavy coating removal, and remove it for finishing passes.
The ideal is a steady, even bite across the segments — you should hear and feel the cut, not push it.
Add weights in small increments and test for 5-10 minutes before committing.
| Signal | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Segments glaze and polish instead of cut | Too much heat from pressure | Lift the machine, lighten pressure, and check bond choice |
| Discs wear unevenly on one side | Operator pushing or twisting | Keep the machine flat and moving in a straight line |
| Floor shows burn marks | Pressure plus high RPM | Slow down and lighten up |
| Very slow pass with lots of dust | Segments cutting rather than shearing | Re-dress segments and reduce weight |
A balanced segment layout, like the Double Zigzag Segment Diamond Trapezoid Grinding Disc (JOY-TP-ZG2), spreads load evenly so you do not have to push to cut.
A>Only for coating removal or very hard concrete. For normal grinding, machine weight is correct.
A: The disc cuts steadily without the operator pushing, the machine does not vibrate harshly, and segments stay cool to the touch.
A>Up to a point, but it glazes the bond and shortens disc life. Steady passes at machine weight often remove more per square meter over the tool's life.
A: Resin pads burn from pressure and dwell. Lift the machine, move faster, and let the pad work at its own speed.
Let the machine and the diamond do the work. Use machine weight as the default, add weight only for coatings, and read the signals — glaze, burn, uneven wear — to adjust. Ask JOY TECH for a disc whose segment pattern and bond suit your machine's weight class, such as the Diamond Trapezoid Grinding Disc (JOY-TP-R3).
