Yes, a diamond blade can cut rebar inside concrete, as long as the blade has a steel-cutting-rated segment (most general concrete blades are fine) and you slow your feed rate when you hit steel. Do not change blades or add coolant on the fly; just ease off the pressure and let the blade do the work.
Standard diamond blades for concrete, such as the diamond saw blades sold for slab cutting, carry segments with a bond that tolerates occasional steel. Ultra-thin tile blades do not. If you know the slab is heavily reinforced, pick a blade marked for reinforced concrete or with wider, deeper segments that keep cutting after steel contact.
When the blade meets rebar you will hear a pitch change and feel slight resistance. Do three things: keep the RPM steady, reduce feed pressure by half, and do not lift the saw out of the cut. Lifting while the blade is still turning can snag the segment and bend the blade. Keep water running if you cut wet; it cools the steel contact point and prevents bond overheating.
Rebar cutting throws sharp sparks and concrete dust. Wear eye protection, a dust mask or respirator, gloves, and hearing protection. Check that the blade's arbor size matches your saw, inspect the segments for cracks before starting, and stand clear of the blade plane. Never use a damaged blade on steel-reinforced concrete.
A: Occasional rebar contact will not ruin a quality concrete blade if you slow the feed. Repeated heavy cutting of steel without slowing down will glaze or crack segments.
A: Only for continuous steel cutting. For rebar embedded in concrete, a good concrete blade with steel-tolerant segments is the right tool.
A: The steel is glazing the diamonds because the bond is too hard for metal. Slow the feed, increase surface speed if possible, and let the blade self-sharpen on the concrete before continuing.
Rebar is a normal part of cutting reinforced slabs. Choose a blade rated for the job, slow down at the steel, and keep your safety gear on. With steady technique your blade will cut concrete and rebar in one pass without drama.
