Burn marks are dark, brown-black blotches caused by heat, not by removing too much concrete. They appear when a resin polishing pad overheats under pressure, glazes, or stays on one spot too long. To fix a mild mark, re-open the area with the previous coarser grit, then step back through two or three finer grits and finish with a light sponge polishing pad. Deep burns that leave a rough, etched patch need a 30–50 grit metal or hybrid pass first.
A resin bond softens around 180–220°C. Once the pad reaches that temperature, the diamond grains stop cutting cleanly and the melted resin smears a dark film over the concrete. The heat sources are:
| Appearance | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Surface brown smudge, still smooth | Resin smear / heat tint | Re-open with previous grit |
| Dark patch, slightly rough | Glazed pad left on too long | Re-open with two coarser grits |
| Grey-white etched patch | Bond burn / diamond pull-out | 30–50 grit metal pass, then full sequence |
| Patch stays dark after wetting | Sealer overheated / yellowed | Strip sealer, re-polish |
If the mark is larger than 1 m², sits on a sealed showroom floor, or touches a control joint where blending is hard, a trained crew with a multi-head grinder will blend it invisibly. Trying to repair it yourself with a single-head angle grinder often leaves a circular halo that is harder to remove than the original burn.
A: Most are not. They are a heat smear on the top 0.05–0.2 mm. Re-opening with one coarser grit and working back through the sequence removes them.
A: Only very light surface heat tint. A burnishing pad generates even more friction heat, so it will make a real burn mark worse.
A: Some faint ones do, because part of the dark tint is water-loaded. If the mark is still there after 24 hours of drying, it is a true heat smear and needs re-polishing.
A: Sealer will not hide a rough or etched patch. It may mask a faint tint, but the gloss difference still shows under direct light.
Burn marks are a fixable mistake, not a lost floor. The rule is simple: go one grit coarser, work back up, and finish with a soft pad.
