Use PCD tooling rather than normal diamond segments to strip cured epoxy: PCD scrapes the coating off, while standard diamonds grind into it and glaze over. Run the machine at normal grinding speed, keep the passes shallow, and never let the tooling dwell. If the floor is left clean of adhesive, standard diamond grinding takes over for leveling.
Epoxy is soft and rubbery. Diamond segments designed for concrete bite into the coating, the resin smears across the diamond surface, and the friction heats the bond until the diamonds dull. What looks like burning is usually glaze plus overheating. The correct tool for the coating layer is PCD, which has no diamond grit exposed and cuts like a scraper.
Start with WerkMaster PCD tooling for epoxy floor removing on a planetary machine. Work in overlapping passes, keeping the plates flat and moving at a normal walking pace. The PCD blades break the epoxy away from the concrete instead of polishing it. After the majority of the coating is gone, switch to a 16-25 grit metal bond segment to clean the residue and profile the surface.
Keep the machine moving; dwell time is what overheats tooling. Lift the head slightly on contaminated areas so the tooling cuts instead of rubbing. If you see smoke, stop and let the tool cool, then reduce pressure. Wet grinding keeps the head cooler if your machine supports water, but verify the floor can take water before you start.
After every few passes, touch the tooling guard (carefully) and listen for a pitch change. A burning head smells hot and the segments turn blue or the surface looks shiny instead of scratched. Stop, let it cool, and switch to a coarser or PCD tool rather than pushing through.
A: On small areas you can, if you move fast and use a coarse bond, but it will glaze quickly. PCD is the dependable method for larger floors.
A: The surface turns uniformly gray and rough with no glossy patches. Wet the floor: glossy wet spots mean remaining coating.
A> No. PCD removes the coating layer and leaves the concrete surface intact; it does not grind down the paste like diamond segments do.
Burning diamonds on epoxy is a tooling mismatch, not a technique failure. Use PCD to strip the coating, switch to diamond segments for the finish, keep the machine moving, and your tooling will stay cool and sharp through the whole job.
