Remove thermoplastic road markings by shaving or grinding them off with PCD (polycrystalline diamond) tooling — a PCD cup wheel on a handheld grinder for small spots, or PCD trapezoid shoes on a walk-behind grinder for whole lines. Ordinary diamond abrasive wheels barely touch thermoplastic; only PCD chips through the hot, rubbery compound cleanly without smearing it into the pavement.
Thermoplastic road marking is not paint. It is a hot-applied asphalt-based compound mixed with glass beads and pigment, melted at around 200°C and sprayed or extruded onto the pavement. It bonds to the concrete, flexes with traffic, and wears slowly over years. When you need to change a parking layout, remove faded lines or strip a slab for resurfacing, the old thermoplastic has to be ground off mechanically; solvent, shot blasting and scarifying flails all struggle with it.
PCD cutters are sintered diamond edges that chip hard, non-abrasive materials instead of grinding them. That is exactly what thermoplastic needs: the PCD shaves the compound off in curls rather than melting it. For small areas — one parking bay, a faded arrow — a PCD cup wheel on an angle grinder is the fastest tool. Diamond PCD Cup Wheels with 6 PCD (JOY-CW-PCD6) clears 100–200 mm wide strips quickly and copes with the glass bead in the marking. For longer lines, Diamond PCD Cup Wheels with 12 Small PCD (JOY-CW-PCD12) gives a smoother, less aggressive pass. On walk-behind grinders, WerkMaster PCD Tooling for Coating Removing (JOY-WM-PCD1R1) strips full-width lines at walking pace.
A: A torch softens it but leaves a sticky, sooty film baked into the pores and can crack the concrete surface. PCD grinding is cleaner and leaves the pavement ready for remarking.
A: Run light passes and keep the wheel moving; PCD is aggressive and will groove soft concrete if you press down hard. Follow with a finer diamond disc to clean the texture.
A: A PCD cup wheel on an angle grinder clears roughly 5–15 metres of line per minute depending on thickness; a walk-behind grinder with PCD shoes covers 100–300 square metres per hour on a full lot strip-out.
Stripping thermoplastic road marking is a PCD job, not an abrasive job. Ordinary diamond wheels glaze over and smear the hot compound, while sintered PCD cutters shave it off cleanly. Keep the pavement cool, grind dry with dust extraction, take shallow repeated passes and finish with a fine diamond disc to erase the ghost line. Shop PCD cup wheels for line and coating removal to equip your strip-out crew.
