The fastest way to remove thinset mortar from concrete is with a PCD (polycrystalline diamond) grinding disc on a planetary floor grinder. A PCD disc scrapes the dried thinset off in one pass without damaging the slab. Chemical softeners and jackhammers are slow, dusty, and rough on the substrate.
Thinset is a cement-based mortar used under tile. When it dries, it is harder than the slab surface in places, and it bonds tenaciously. After tile removal, you are left with ridges of thinset 2-8 mm high that must come off before new flooring, epoxy, or polished concrete can go down.
