Laser-welded core bits fuse the segment to the steel barrel with a laser beam, producing a joint strong enough for wet drilling through reinforced concrete and rebar. Brazed (silver-soldered) bits use a lower-temperature brazing alloy; they are cheaper but the joint softens under heat and is limited to dry or light-duty work. For B2B buyers: choose laser-welded for wet, heavy, reinforced and rental fleets; brazed is acceptable only for occasional dry masonry work.
| Factor | Laser-welded | Brazed |
|---|---|---|
| Joint strength | Very high | Moderate |
| Wet drilling in rebar | Yes, standard | Risky; segments may drop |
| Dry drilling in block | Yes | Yes |
| Heat resistance | Up to segment melting point | Degrades above ~600 °C |
| Unit price | Higher | Lower |
| Best buyer | Contractors, rental, fleets | Occasional DIY / light masonry |
Our Diamond Core Drill Bit (Wet) — JOY-DCB-W is laser-welded specifically for reinforced concrete; budget light-duty jobs can use brazed versions, but they should never be run wet through rebar.
Anything wet, anything through rebar, anything in hard high-strength concrete, or anything expected to last a shift should be laser-welded. If you run a rental yard, buy laser-welded; a dropped segment in a customer's hole is not worth the warranty claim.
A: Look at the joint. Laser welds leave a thin, uneven bead around the segment base; brazed joints show a clear silver-colored fillet. Ask the supplier for the spec sheet — reputable makers state it plainly.
A: Light wet drilling in plain concrete (no rebar) may work, but any rebar contact can overheat the braze and drop a segment. Do not risk it on paid work.
A: No. On reinforced concrete they last several times longer than brazed bits, so cost per hole is usually lower even when the sticker price is higher.
A: Stop the machine immediately. A missing segment causes imbalance and wobble, and can crack the barrel or injure the operator. Pull the bit, inspect, and replace.
The joint between segment and barrel is what decides whether a core bit survives wet rebar work or fails on the first deep hole. Laser welding is the standard for professional, wet, reinforced and rental use; brazing remains a cheap option for dry masonry. Buy to the application, and budget for laser-welded bits on any serious concrete job.
