Cement terrazzo grinds like concrete: start with metal-bond diamonds and move through standard resin pads from 50 to 3000. Epoxy or resin-bond terrazzo is thermoplastic — the matrix softens and smears under heat — so skip aggressive metal grinding, run cool with light pressure, and jump from 200 grit directly to soft resin or copper-bond transitional pads. Using concrete pads on epoxy terrazzo leaves melted ridges, pull-out chips, and a dull haze.
Cement terrazzo is marble or granite chips set in white Portland cement. It is hard, porous, and behaves like polished concrete. Epoxy terrazzo (also called resin-bond or polymer terrazzo) uses epoxy or polyester binder instead of cement. The binder is smoother and thinner, and it softens around 60–80°C. That heat sensitivity changes everything about how you polish it.
A heavy metal-bond diamond grinding a dry epoxy floor builds heat fast. The epoxy surface softens, the diamond drags a smear of polymer across the chips, and the pad loads up with melted binder. Once smeared, the floor looks dull and wavy no matter how fine the grit. The fix is prevention: light pressure, several passes at lower weight, and keep the pad cool with dust extraction or wet polishing.
| Stage | Cement terrazzo | Epoxy / resin terrazzo |
|---|---|---|
| Leveling | Metal-bond 30–50 grit | 200 grit soft pad, light pressure — do not metal-grind |
| Transition | Hybrid / transitional 50–150 | Copper-bond or soft resin 200–400 |
| Refining | Resin 400 → 800 → 1500 | Soft resin 400 → 800 → 1500, cool passes |
| Gloss | 3000 + burnishing | 1500–3000 soft resin, low machine weight |
A: Yes, wet polishing is recommended for epoxy terrazzo because water holds the temperature down. Keep the floor flooded and use the same soft resin sequence.
A: Cement terrazzo is porous, cold to the touch, and accepts a densifier. Epoxy terrazzo is smoother, non-porous, and often has thinner chips set in a glossy binder.
A: Most old terrazzo is cement-based. Start at 200 grit with resin pads and build up; reserve metal-bond grinding for deep damage only.
Cement terrazzo is concrete in a polished finish; epoxy terrazzo is a heat-sensitive polymer. Match the pad bond to the matrix, keep epoxy floors cool, and never pull a metal-bond diamond across a resin binder. Contact JOY TECH for pad sets matched to terrazzo type and floor condition.
