For aggressive stock removal, choose wide, tall segments (10-15 mm high) with open gullets and a segment shape that exposes more diamond—usually a parabolic, arrow, or double-S profile. Rounded segments cut smoother but slower; square segments cut faster but leave a rougher scratch. Match the shape to the bond, not just the look.
| Shape | Best for | Behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Square / flat | Soft concrete, fast stock removal | Aggressive, deep scratch |
| Double-S / parabolic | General purpose | Balanced cut, self-sharpening |
| Round / crescent | Hard concrete, finishing | Smooth, less aggressive |
| Arrow / spike | Very hard concrete, rough grinding | High impact, open chips |
Our double-S segment discs uses a double-S segment for balanced daily production.
A 12 mm segment lasts about 2-3 times longer than a 5 mm segment on the same machine. Taller segments also run cooler because more bond volume is available to wear. For aggressive work, specify 10-15 mm segments.
Segment spacing is as important as shape. Open gullets let concrete dust evacuate, which keeps the diamonds cutting. Closed or dense segments load up on soft material. See our concrete grinding discs category for open-arrangement discs.
Square segments on soft-bond tooling, on soft to medium concrete. On hard concrete, arrow segments win.
Less so. By 120 grit you are refining, not stock-removing.
No. They wear at different rates and create an uneven scratch pattern.
Aggressive grinding is about tall segments, open gullets, and a shape matched to your concrete hardness. contact JOY TECH if you tell us your concrete type, we will recommend the exact segment.
