Swirl marks are circular scratches left by a floor grinder, almost always caused by uneven pressure on a tilted machine, mismatched or unevenly worn diamond pucks, a plate that is not flat on the floor, or too few overlapping passes. Fix the setup — level the grinding head, check puck height, run lighter pressure and cross your passes — and existing swirls disappear under one or two finer grinding passes.
If the swirls are already in the floor:
A: Light circles after one pass are normal; they should disappear on the next grit. Persistent rings after two passes mean a setup issue, not a normal finish.
A: Brand-new pucks have sharp edges that scribe until they break in. Run a short break-in pass on a test area, or press lightly for the first five minutes.
A: Shallow swirls polish out with resin pads starting one grit finer than your last metal pass. Deep gouges must be re-ground before polishing.
A: Usually a floor slope: on an incline, the lower side of the loaded plate carries more weight. Level the head slightly on the downhill side or adjust the machine's pressure balance.
Swirl marks are a setup problem: level the plate, run matched pucks in sets, lighten your pressure and cross your passes.
