Quick Answer: A core drill wanders when the bit is not seated, the rig is not anchored level, there is no pilot hole, or you feed too aggressively. Fix it by drilling a pilot hole, seating the bit at low speed, anchoring the rig solidly, and letting the bit cut with light, steady pressure.
Core bits wander the most in the first few seconds, before the rim has a full ring of contact. Without a pilot hole or starter guide, the bit slides across the surface and starts the hole off center. Once the hole is started wrong, it stays wrong: the bit follows the path it has cut.
Always drill a pilot hole with a small masonry bit, or use a starter template, before mounting the core bit.
On walls, a core drill stand that is not anchored allows the bit to lean and walk. Level the rig in two directions, anchor it into the surface with the supplied bolts or vacuum pad, and check that the chuck runs true. A slightly bent or worn arbor also produces an oval, wandering hole.
Keep the feed light enough that the bit cuts its own path, and dress a worn bit on masonry before use.
If the hole has started off center, stop immediately. Plug or repair the bad start, re-mark the true center, and restart with a pilot hole. Trying to steer a core bit back on line does not work: the bit only follows its existing cut. On fresh concrete, a starter ring or a small pilot hole drilled exactly at the mark fixes the problem before it happens.
Usually uneven feed or hard aggregate on one side. Lighten the feed and make sure the segments are worn evenly.
It is the simplest insurance against wandering. A 1/4-inch pilot through the surface is enough to seat the core bit.
Yes. Runout from a bent arbor or worn chuck makes the bit cut on one side, producing a drifting or oversized hole.
Wandering cores are start-up problems: pilot the hole, seat the bit slowly, anchor the rig, and feed light. Fix those four things and your core drill setup will cut round, true holes in concrete every time.
