Average response time: under 24 hours

Dry core drilling creates a plume of silica dust that must be controlled at the source. Use a HEPA vacuum connected to the drill through a dust extraction adapter, press the machine in evenly, keep the bit sharp, and switch to wet drilling indoors when water is allowed. Without extraction, a single 100 mm hole can fill a room with respirable crystalline silica, which is why OSHA, the EU Silica Directive and most site rules now require it.
A vacuum on the floor is too late. Effective extraction pulls dust off the cut point:
Wet drilling eliminates silica dust almost completely but leaves slurry. If the job is indoors, below grade or near finished surfaces, wet drilling is usually cleaner:
| Dry with extraction | Wet drilling | |
|---|---|---|
| Dust | Controlled but not zero | Near zero |
| Cleanup | Empty the vacuum bag | Capture and dispose of slurry |
| Bit cooling | Air only | Excellent; longer life |
| Best for | Exterior, block, cold weather | Interior, hard concrete, rebar |
For wet work, fit a Water Valve Adapter — JOY-WVA to regulate flow to 1–2 liters per minute — enough to cool, not enough to flood the slab.
A: No on any regulated site. Even a single hole generates respirable silica above exposure limits; extraction or wet drilling is mandatory.
A: A HEPA industrial vacuum at 150+ CFM (M-class / H-class) with a 38 mm hose is typical for 50–150 mm bits; larger rigs need 250 CFM or more.
A: Yes. The water hole is also an air passage: it lets air in and dust out. Sealing it kills extraction efficiency and overheats the segment.
A: Often slightly slower on light block, but faster on hard concrete because the bit stays cool and sharp. For rebar and high-strength concrete, wet drilling usually wins on total time per hole.
Dry core drilling is fast and convenient, but dust control is non-negotiable. Fit a proper extraction adapter, run a HEPA vacuum, dress the bit, and use PPE; when the job is indoor or hard concrete, switch to wet drilling with controlled water. Done right, dust stops being a trade-off and your bits last longer too.
