Choose a wet diamond core drill bit for reinforced concrete, brick and asphalt when water supply is available — it cuts faster and lasts longer. Choose a dry core drill bit for interior renovation, soft brick and lightweight block when water is not an option. Match the thread (1/2 BSP, 1-1/4-7 UNC, M16) to your drilling machine spindle, and select the diameter to match the anchor, pipe or duct you are installing. For holes deeper than 400mm, use a continuous threaded tube drill to extend the drilling depth.
| Feature | Wet Core Drill Bit | Dry Core Drill Bit |
|---|---|---|
| Water Requirement | Requires constant water flow | No water — dry drilling |
| Best Materials | Reinforced concrete, brick, asphalt | Concrete, soft brick, lightweight blocks |
| Cutting Speed | Faster, more aggressive | Moderate — interval drilling to cool |
| Tool Life | Longer (water cools and flushes) | Shorter if overheated |
| Typical Diameters | 8mm up to 1000mm | 19mm up to 220mm |
| Typical Threads | 1/2 BSP, 1-1/4-7 UNC | 1-1/4-7, 1/2 gas, M16 |
| Best For | Structural drilling, deep holes, large diameters | Interior renovation, dust-sensitive sites |
A core drill bit is a hollow cylindrical steel tube with diamond segments welded at the cutting end. As the bit rotates, the diamond segments grind a circular groove, leaving a solid concrete core that is removed when the hole is complete. Two welding technologies are common: copper brazing for general-purpose bits and laser welding for heavily reinforced concrete where maximum joint strength is required. Because the tube is hollow, water (wet drilling) or side grooves (dry drilling) carry out the slurry or dust.
Smaller bits typically use 1/2 BSP threads; larger bits use 1-1/4-7 UNC. Rotary hammer drills may need an exchange adapter to connect the bit to the machine spindle. Check your machine's spindle thread before ordering.
Measure the outside diameter of the anchor, pipe or duct you are installing and choose a bit slightly larger (typically +2 to +4mm). Standard ranges: wet core bits 8-1000mm, dry core bits 19-220mm, stone hole saws 6-165mm.
For hard concrete, select a soft bond so diamonds expose faster. For soft, abrasive materials, select a hard bond for longer life. For heavily reinforced concrete, choose laser-welded segments rated for rebar. JOY TECH offers core drill segments in Flat, Turbo, Crown, Cellular, Roof, Dot, Grid and Ring types to match different conditions.
Standard working lengths are 245-400mm. For holes deeper than one tube length, use a continuous threaded tube drill — its coupling, tube and cutter head screw together to drill up to 2 meters, and you replace only the worn cutter head.
Wet drilling with a water valve adapter cools the segments, flushes slurry and extends bit life — always prefer it where water is available. Use dry bits with a dust collector adapter connected to a vacuum for dust-free interior work.
Smaller bits use 1/2 BSP; larger bits use 1-1/4-7 UNC. Some machines use M16, 1/2 gas or SDS+ — check your machine spindle and use an exchange adapter if needed.
Standard working length is 245-400mm. With threaded extension tubes, continuous tube drills reach up to 2 meters.
Yes — diamond segments cut through both concrete and rebar. For heavily reinforced structures, choose laser-welded bits with segments rated for rebar.
The segments may be glazed (polished) — sharpen with a dressing block or abrade against a brick. Overheating from insufficient water or excessive pressure is the most common cause of premature failure.

Choosing the right diamond core drill bit comes down to three decisions: wet or dry, thread match, and diameter. Start from your material and water availability, verify your machine spindle thread, then select the diameter of the anchor or pipe you are installing. With the correct bit and technique, core drilling becomes a clean, fast and reliable operation — and with JOY TECH's full range of wet, dry, threaded-tube and segment options, every drilling job has a matching solution.
