Water rings on marble are acid etch marks, not stains: re-hone the spot wet with 200-400 grit resin pads, then polish 800-1500-3000 and re-seal. This removes the dull ring by cutting the surface down to fresh marble — a topical wax only hides it for days.
Marble is calcium carbonate. Water with a slight acid (lemon, vinegar, soda) dissolves the polish and leaves a dull, ring-shaped etch. The ring is a shallow valley in the surface, so the fix is mechanical, not chemical.
| Step | Grit | Pad |
|---|---|---|
| Cut etch out | 200-400 | Wet resin, medium |
| Smooth | 800 | Wet resin, fine |
| Polish | 1500 | Polish pad |
| Gloss | 3000 | High-polish pad |
Use white resin polishing pads — their softer bond is right for marble.
A: Only temporarily with wax or paste — the etch is physical, so the surface must be re-cut to remove it permanently.
A: 30-60 minutes per ring with a hand grinder, or a few hours for a whole top.
A: If you step through all grits to 3000 and seal, the repaired area blends in; on heavy etch, re-polish the whole slab.
A: Start at 200 and go no finer than needed; 3000 brings back the original gloss.
Water rings leave marble by re-cutting the surface: 200-400 wet resin pads erase the etch, 800-3000 restore the gloss, and sealer keeps it that way. For stone-safe polishing, see our resin floor polishing pads and 3-inch resin pads.
