Polishing is the full process that grinds, densifies and refines concrete to a gloss (metal → transitional → resin steps). Burnishing is a maintenance step — running a soft pad (resin puck, wool or burnishing pad) over an already-polished floor to restore shine, remove light scuffs and keep the gloss between full polishes.
| Aspect | Polishing | Burnishing |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Create the finish | Maintain/restore the finish |
| Tools | Metal, transitional, resin pads | Burnishing pads, wool, resin pucks |
| Frequency | One-time / full restoration | Monthly to quarterly maintenance |
| Material removed | Yes — grinds the surface | Minimal — friction and polish |
| Result | High gloss, densified floor | Refreshed shine, lighter gloss |
Our Burnishing Pads are made for this maintenance pass on polished concrete.
No — burnishing doesn't create gloss on a raw or troweled floor. The floor must be polished first, then burnished for maintenance.
High speed — 1000–2500 RPM on an auto-scrubber or burnisher, or a planetary grinder at high RPM with a burnishing pad.
High-traffic retail: weekly to monthly. Warehouses and offices: monthly to quarterly, depending on traffic.
Polishing creates the finish; burnishing keeps it. Build a maintenance schedule around burnishing passes between full polishes, and the floor stays glossy for years. JOY TECH's burnishing pads fit burnishers and planetary grinders.
