Average response time: under 24 hours

Every diamond tool operator must wear, as a baseline: ANSI Z87.1 (or EN 166) safety glasses with side shields, hearing protection rated at SNR 25+ dB (plugs under muffs for walk-behind saws at 100+ dB(A)), a N95/P2 or P100 respirator matched to silica exposure, cut-resistant gloves (ANSI A4 or higher), steel- or composite-toe boots with slip-resistant soles, a hi-vis vest (ANSI Class 2 minimum on any traffic-adjacent job), and a hard hat where there is overhead work or falling debris. Add a face shield for handheld saw work, and knee protection for floor grinders. This is the non-negotiable set; every job adds more. For our earlier note, see blade safety RPM and PPE and core drilling PPE.
Diamond tools are loud. A 350 mm walk-behind saw runs 100-108 dB(A) at the operator's ear. OSHA's action level is 85 dB(A) — above that, hearing protection is mandatory, and a hearing conservation program (annual testing, training) is required above 90 dB(A).
| Tool | Typical dB(A) | Hearing protection |
|---|---|---|
| Walk-behind saw (350-500 mm) | 100-108 | Plugs + muffs (SNR 30+ combined) |
| Handheld cut-off saw | 98-105 | Muffs over plugs |
| Floor grinder (electric) | 88-95 | Plugs (SNR 27+) |
| Core drill (electric, wet) | 85-92 | Plugs |
| Polishing machine | 78-85 | Plugs on long shifts |
Noise-induced hearing loss is cumulative and irreversible. By the time a cutter notices tinnitus, the damage is done. Put hearing protection on before starting the tool, not after.
Diamond tools throw chips, water slurry, and occasionally segment pieces. Minimum:
Silica is the long-term hazard. Match the respirator to exposure (see silica PEL):
Respirators are a backup to water and HEPA extraction, not a substitute. Engineering controls first, respirators second.
| Tool | Extra PPE / setup |
|---|---|
| Walk-behind saw | Hearing plugs+muffs, face shield, water-resistant apron, hi-vis |
| Handheld cut-off saw | Face shield, cut-resistant gloves, chainsaw-style chaps for petrol saws |
| Core drill | Face shield (slurry spray), safety harness for overhead drilling, anchor for rig |
| Floor grinder | Knee pads, respirator (HEPA extraction running), hearing plugs |
| Polishing machine | Knee pads, slip-resistant boots, gloves |
Core drilling overhead is a special case: water and slurry drip onto the operator, and the rig can spin if the bit jams. Use a wet-vac recovery, a face shield, and anchor the rig. See core drilling safety. For a wet core bit, see our wet core range.
Before starting any diamond tool:
A: No, unless they are Z87-rated prescription glasses. Regular glasses shatter on impact and can themselves become a hazard. Wear Z87 safety glasses over them, or get prescription Z87 specs.
A: No on a worksite. You need to hear the saw, the shouts, and the changes in tool sound that signal a jam. Music cancels that. Save it for breaks.
A: Only if there is overhead work, rebar, or falling debris. On a clear slab floor, ANSI Z87 glasses, knee pads, and respirator are the baseline. But the moment you are working near a suspended load or under a saw cutting above you, the hard hat goes on.
Safety glasses: scratched or cracked, replace. Hearing protection: foam plugs every shift, reusable plugs every 3-6 months, muffs every 2-3 years. Respirator cartridges: every shift or when breathing hard. Boots: when the sole wears smooth. Hi-vis: when the reflective strips fade.
PPE is not optional decoration. The right gear — glasses, hearing protection, respirator, gloves, boots, hi-vis, hard hat — costs under USD 300 per crew member and prevents the injuries that end careers. Build the pre-job checklist into every morning briefing; make it part of the job, not a chore. Pair your PPE with the right blade for the job, and never run a tool without its guard in place.
