Epoxy removal tools differ more in cost per square metre than in sticker price. Fast-change PCD shoes and PCD trapezoid discs cost $4-$28 per piece but strip 150-800 m²/hr; bush-hammer rollers run $15-$60 and texture rather than fully remove heavy buildup; metal-bond diamond shoes cost $1-$6 and finish what PCD starts; alloy-tipped planer teeth run cheap but wear fast on hard concrete. As indicative math, PCD tooling usually lands at $0.05-$0.15 per m² of coating removed, and a mixed program - PCD first pass, diamond follow-up - gives the lowest total cost on real projects.
| Tool type | Indicative removal rate | Indicative tool life | Indicative unit price | Best situation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PCD trapezoid disc / fast-change shoe | 150-800 m²/hr of coating | 500-2,000 m² per set | $4-$28 | Thick epoxy, glue, polyurethane - main removal |
| PCD cup wheel | 10-30 m²/hr | 300-800 m² per wheel | $12-$28 | Edges and corners |
| Bush-hammer roller (fast-change) | 100-300 m²/hr texturing | 1,000-3,000 m² per roller | $15-$60 | Texturing and light surface prep |
| Metal-bond diamond grinding disc / shoe | 60-150 m²/hr grinding | 200-800 m² per set | $1-$6 per shoe | Leveling and scratch after PCD |
| Alloy-tipped planer / scarifier teeth | 80-200 m²/hr | 300-1,000 m² per tooth set | $0.5-$3 per tooth | Soft coatings on small walk-behind planers |
A cheap $2 diamond shoe looks unbeatable next to a $20 PCD disc - until you measure area. The $2 shoe glazes on epoxy and removes roughly 20 m² an hour; the $20 PCD disc clears 300 m² an hour. Labour and machine time are the big numbers on the job, so faster removal almost always wins on total project cost even when the tool itself costs ten times as much.
A: On epoxy removal, PCD - indicative $0.05-$0.15/m² versus $0.20-$0.50/m² for diamond shoes that glaze and stall. The lowest-cost program is PCD for removal, then diamond for leveling.
A: As an indicative figure, 150-400 m²/hr on a 580 mm planetary grinder for medium epoxy; 700-900 mm remote machines reach 500-800 m²/hr on open floors. Coating thickness and concrete hardness swing the number.
A: Mostly texture - bush hammers crack and roughen coatings rather than shear them off. They pair well after PCD for a uniform scratch profile, or for anti-slip texture work.
A: Not optimally. Full-face PCD clears thick buildup but over-works thin films; 2-3 segment PCD handles medium coatings. Budget one set per thickness band - the reorder quantity is where volume pricing helps.
Efficiency and cost meet in one number: cost per square metre of coating actually removed. PCD leads the removal stage, diamond leads the leveling stage, and the right mix - not the cheapest sticker price - wins the project.
